The Gift of Training Focus By Mandy Benedict

"Instead of focusing on {the} circumstances that you cannot change – focus strongly and powerfully on the circumstances that you can."- Joy Page

In each moment of our lives, we all have a choice. Where will we direct our focus? Directing our focus is not a common trait in today’s hustle and bustle society. Consider all the ways we can get distracted. There are texts, tweets, calls, all forms of media, and any information we would like can be instantly delivered on our mobile devices. Distraction, multitasking, and the inability to be present are more common in today’s society than ever before. Focus is a skill that can and needs to be trained for optimal outcomes and, most importantly, our experience of life.

As we crested the top of the mountain, my heart was filled with love and gratitude. My focus brought me here! A beautiful fall mountain bike ride with my best friend of twenty-five years. We were chatting as we always do on our rides together, countless trials sharing our greatest triumphs and most challenging moments. We have ridden together so much that no matter how technical or steep, we are within talking range. As we reached the top of this particular climb, my friend let out an exuberant yell of elation as she climbed over a technical rock move on her bike for the first time. Years of focus and training made it possible at that moment to achieve that which she had not before. It had been a while since we had ridden together. We spent most of the ride catching up on what was happening in our lives. As we were sharing what was unfolding, I was aware of my focus. Even in times of transition, I have trained to focus on gratitude, love, and what is going well.

This focus was not always the case. In the past, when I have been one degree off my mark of vision, I would focus on the outcomes that are less desirable and sometimes painful. I spent much of my time focused on the places I missed the mark, and my feelings of needing to accomplish more so I would feel worthy. This focus created a stressful and frantic way of being. I was lacking fulfillment and was less productive even though I was working very hard.

With focus training, my mind is supporting me to bring the experience I choose to what I am creating in life. As a result, our company has tripled in size from 2012 to the present. I have more responsibility and accountability than ever, but my experience is not one of stress. I enjoy each day I get to create and expand with my team and community. My focus is consistently on what is working well and how we can improve — empowering each person to thrive and create great results for themselves and others. My relationships with those closest to me are filled with deep connection, authenticity, lots of laughter, and unconditional love. The power, strength, and joy I experience in my physical body at this point have far surpassed life in my twenties. I am grateful for the loving and thriving global community of individuals that surrounds me and that they are committed to training from the inside out. As I sit here this morning, writing the sun is rising. The sky is pink. The leaves are gold, and I’m enjoying the beautiful panoramic views from my home. I had a focus on a beautiful home on top of a mountain, convenient to my lifestyle and a space that could be enjoyed with friends, family, and community. I purchased that home three years ago, and I am enjoying it now more than the day I bought it. This home is filled with appreciation, love, and wonderful experiences. All of these outcomes have been created with an intentional and consistent focus on the highest!

Life will still happen, and unexpected events will take place. In each moment, we can choose to wield an incredible power by training and directing our focus. Are we focused on what is going well, and how we can improve upon it?
